Apolo Ohno wins Gold in the 500M short track!

I was a dedicated TV viewer of the Winter Olympics for the last two weeks, and it has been fulfilling on many accounts. No competitor has inspired me more than Seattle's own, Apolo Ohno. A fierce competitor on the track, but always showing respect for his competition, his team and himself when in the public eye. What an amazing 500M race! I'll be re-playing that performance in my mind for quite a while.

There were plenty of other U.S. winners. Way to go, Joey Cheek! He won gold in the 500M and Silver in the 1000M, donating all $40K of his rewards to charity. Chad Hedrick was an exciting new member of the team, winning gold in the 5000M, silver in the 10,000M and bronze in the 1500M speed skating. Chad is one awesome team player! Shani Davis, who incidently is Apolo Ohno's best friend, took home the gold in the 1000M and silver in the 1500M speed skating. I am down-playing the media's attempt to make this huge rivalry between Chad and Shani, but clearly there were some disagreements that need to be resolved.

Other impressive U.S. Olympic winners were: Shaun White, "The Flying Tomato", who took the Halfpipe gold medal. Later in an interview Shaun expressed an interest in meeting up with Sasha Cohen, silver medalist in the ladies figure skating. Good luck Shaun! Then there was Lindsey (showboat) Jacobellis, who snow boarded her way to a silver, and Seth Wescott, who took a well deserved gold, also in the snowboard cross.

Let's see, there were a few other nice surprises. Ted Ligety won the gold in the alpine skiing combined event. Julia Mancuso won the gold in the Giant slalom. Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto showed us a passionate ice dancing performance, worthy of a silver medal. Sasha Cohen earned a silver medal thanks to a magical figure skating short program, even with a fall in her long program.

There are some other winners that I just must mention from other contries. Shikuka Arakawa of Japan skated a flawless and beautiful performance, getting the gold in ladies figure skating. The Russians continued their dominance in couples figure skating with Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov and in the individual mens with Yevgeny Plushenko. One thing they do very well, is keep the focus on perfectly performed routines that also bring the highest level of points. Italy's ice dancing stars, Barbara Fusar-Poli and Maurizio Margaglio certainly were the most emotionally charged couple on and off the ice, due to an unfortunate drop in the long program after an outstanding short program. What an amazing win by Giorgio di Centa of Italy in the final event of the games, the cross country 50 Km race!
